Hamsters were created on the 6th day of creation
24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so.
Genesis 1:24
About the Syrian Hamster
also know as The Teddy Bear Hamster
Syrian hamsters come in many different colors, and can have long hair but most have short hair. Syrians are solitary animals and only come together to mate in the wild. If two are housed together from babies they get along partly, but often they will fight and eventually one will get hurt. This is why they should be housed separately. Like most rodents, the Syrian hamster is nocturnal but some times is active during the day. Both the male and female hamster love to make nests to sleep in. Syrians are very soft and tame easily from babies. As with most small animals the males tame the best but the females are not much harder to tame. Syrians are one of the nicest hamsters. The dwarf hamsters can be mean and difficult to tame. Syrian Hamsters have pouches inside their mouths (see the photos). With these pouches they collect food and bedding, carrying it off to a nesting spot. Many times they hide food all over the place and not just in the nest. Syrians live for about 2-4 years.
This is the same hamster in the next 4 photos.
Care Information
1. CAGE: A minimum size cage for a Syrian Hamster is 12”x12” (Bigger is preferred). The cage should have plenty of openings for fresh air. Wired cages are the best because they allow lots of air flow.
2. FOOD: Syrians like seed diets best and not pellets. Old seed should be dumped 1-2 times a week. Watch and see how much your hamster eats so you know how much seed to put in next time. Remember hamsters hide their food so if the dish is empty he or she may still have plenty of food.
3. VEGETABLES: Give vegetables at least once weekly but only what they can eat in one hour. Good vegetables to give your hamster are broccoli, Romaine lettuce, squash, green beans, etcetera.
4. FRUITS: Feed hamsters fruit at least once a week but again, only what they can eat in one hour: papaya, apples, grapes, apricots, oranges, bananas, strawberries, etcetera.
5. WATER: Rodent water bottles are the best. Open water dishes get dirty and spill easily. Rodent bottles can leak especially if the bedding is touching it, watch out for this! Fill water as needed.
6. TOYS: Syrians love toys like wheels, tubes, and lots of stuff to chew on.
7. CLEANING: The entire cage should be washed with a mild soap every week and the bedding changed 1-2 times a week. Syrian Hamsters usually pick a potty spot in their cage but they go poo all over. The potty spot may need to be cleaned every other day.

You will need two separate cages otherwise they will breed all the time and this can be hard on the females body.

Hi again Jeanice,
This hamster happens to be a male.
Hi Jeanice,
Syrian hamsters are also called Teddy Bear hamsters but are they same hamster just two different names 😉
the black long haired hamster in the picture is that a male or female?
WHich one gets bigger the SYrian hamster or the Teddy bear? or are they all about the same size wen they reach adulthood
I have a male Syrian hamster named Hammie, and a female Syrian named Muffin. Males are better because they don’t smell as bad! The females emit this awful smell when they go into heat. I just clean Muffin’s cage out more often to keep the smell down.

Hello Kyra,
Teddy Bear/Syrian Hamsters are one of the most friendliest hamsters, but as with any animal there are some that are not friendly. The male Teddy Bear Hamster are usually nicer than the females. Most of my females, that I use to have, would bite but my males were nice and would not bite with the exception of one male. To answer your question, I would recommend you get a male.
I would like to know if Teddy Bear Hamsters are nice? Like are girls better then boys or boys better then girls?
