Most long haired cats need help to keep their fur mat free.  Pet owners that have a long haired cat probably already realize this.  Older cats especially need extra help to maintain a long coat.  Daily or even weekly brushing will easily keep a coat mat free but you must be thorough when brushing.  Kittens should be trained at an early age to accept grooming.  Do not make brushing your kitten a game by teasing them with the brush and allowing them to bite it.  Start with short grooming sessions and build on them.  Most cats will enjoy being brushed and will enjoy it even more as they become accustom to it.

Don’t let your kitty become mated because it can cause pain to the cat.  Untreated mats become tighter and tighter as time goes on and will pinch and twist the cat’s skin.  Also a mated coat can causes infections on the skin beneath the mat.  If you cat is matted seek help from a professional groomer.  A groomed cat is a happy cat.
